The Senate has ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a National Youth Service Corps member, Etimbuk Daniel, at an NYSC orientation camp in Enugu State, following allegations that he experienced delays in receiving adequate medical attention.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance moved on Thursday by Senator Aniekan Bassey, representing Akwa Ibom North-East, during plenary.

Bassey said the Senate received with shock and grief the news of Daniel’s death while he was undergoing the mandatory National Youth Service Corps programme in Enugu.

He described the deceased as an outstanding student leader and former President of the Students’ Union Government of Akwa Ibom State University who had proceeded on national service.

According to the senator, reports indicated that Daniel developed what was initially described as a minor headache but later suffered complications after allegedly experiencing delays in receiving adequate medical attention at the camp clinic.

Bassey stressed that the circumstances surrounding the death had raised serious concerns about the quality of healthcare available at NYSC orientation camps, particularly the availability of qualified medical personnel, functional health facilities and effective emergency referral systems.

He said the reported lapses underscored the need for a broader review of healthcare delivery at orientation camps to prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of corps members nationwide.

The lawmaker maintained that the government had a responsibility to protect the welfare of citizens, adding that young graduates mobilised for national service deserved access to adequate medical care throughout their service year.

He noted that Daniel’s death had thrown his family, the Akwa Ibom State University community and the people of Akwa Ibom State into mourning.

Senator Mohammed Monguno, representing Borno North, seconded the motion and supported the call for an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding Daniel’s death and determine whether any negligence was involved.

Following deliberations, the Senate called for a thorough investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident and determine whether alleged negligence or deficiencies in medical care contributed to the corps member’s death.

The upper chamber directed its Committees on Police Affairs; Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters; Youth Development; and Health to investigate the matter in conjunction with the Nigeria Police Force and the State Security Service (SSS).

The Senate also observed a minute of silence in honour of Daniel and prayed for his family to be granted the strength to bear the loss.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, commended Bassey for bringing the matter before the chamber and urged the relevant committees and security agencies to conduct a comprehensive investigation.
