The Kano State Police Command has warned that anyone who violates the existing ban on Durbar and horse or other animal-riding activities in public places will be arrested and prosecuted, irrespective of their position or status.

The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, issued the warning at a news conference in Kano on Friday, October 2, saying the security directive remained in force and must be respected by all residents.

Bakori said the Kano State Government imposed the ban after consultations with relevant security stakeholders to preserve public peace and order.

He explained that reports of apparent breaches had prompted the police and other security agencies to reiterate the directive and demand strict compliance.

“The threats which the ban was put in place to check are still potent,” he said.

The commissioner stressed that maintaining public peace, safety and order remained the primary responsibility of security agencies, adding that activities capable of jeopardising public safety would not be tolerated.

He said any individual, institution or organisation intending to hold a Durbar or undertake horse or other animal-riding activities in public places must submit a written request to the command at least 72 hours before the proposed event.

According to him, the request must be submitted through the Office of the Commissioner of Police to enable security agencies to assess the risks and make appropriate arrangements for public safety.

The notice requirement accompanies the command’s reaffirmation of the existing ban and should not be treated as an announcement that the restriction has been lifted.

Bakori urged residents to comply with lawful security directives and cooperate with the police and other agencies to maintain peace across the state.

He reiterated that enforcement would apply to everyone, warning that a person’s position or status would not shield them from arrest and prosecution for violating the directive.

The commissioner assured residents that security agencies remained committed to protecting lives and property and preserving public order.
