Hundreds of students of the Taraba State College of Nursing Sciences, Jalingo, on Monday staged a peaceful protest after suspected hoodlums reportedly broke into one of the female hostels located outside the school premises, allegedly raped a student and carted away phones and other valuables.

The protest followed the overnight attack, which students said occurred in the early hours of Monday when the assailants invaded the hostel and attacked occupants. During the incident, one female student was allegedly raped and physically injured. Students said the victim was later taken to a hospital in the Mile 6 area of Jalingo for treatment.
A students’ union official, who spoke anonymously for fear of victimisation, said the latest attack was the second security breach involving students’ hostels within two weeks.
According to the student leader, suspected hoodlums had earlier attacked some of the hostels last week and made away with phones and other valuables belonging to students. He said the students reported the earlier incident to the school authorities, after which the Taraba State Commissioner for Tertiary Education visited the college and assured them that security measures would be strengthened around the hostels.
He, however, alleged that no concrete security improvement was put in place before the latest incident occurred.
The protesting students gathered at the college gate on Monday, calling on the Taraba State Government, the college management and security agencies to take urgent steps to protect them from further attacks.
They also questioned why students were still being housed outside the school premises despite the existence of hostel facilities within the college.
The students said the college has seven hostels — one for male students and six for female students — but alleged that students are still being accommodated outside the campus in conditions they described as unsafe and poorly secured.
The latest incident came days after officials of the Taraba State Ministry of Tertiary Education visited the College of Nursing Sciences following an earlier reported robbery attack on students’ hostels.
In its earlier account, the ministry said armed men had invaded the hostels, assaulted students and stole 33 mobile phones. It added that some students sustained injuries, while three phones and a cutlass were reportedly recovered at the scene.
Following that earlier incident, the ministry reportedly recommended urgent security measures around the hostels, intensified investigation into the attacks and the relocation of students to safer accommodation. It also called for the completion and commissioning of new hostel facilities within the college.
With Monday’s protest, students said those earlier recommendations had not been fully implemented, leaving them exposed to repeated attacks.
When contacted, the Provost of the college, Dr Dorcas Dugule, confirmed that the matter was being handled but declined to make detailed comments immediately.
