The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old woman, Nwachukwu Blessing, over an alleged plot to stage her own kidnapping and obtain ₦3 million ransom from her family.

Police said the suspect allegedly conspired with a female associate identified simply as Onyinye and another male accomplice, whose identity is yet to be established, to create the impression that she had been abducted.
Spokesperson for the command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the development in a statement on Sunday, saying Blessing was arrested by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, following intelligence gathered during investigation into the reported kidnapping.
According to the police, Blessing was initially reported to have been abducted along the Onitsha–Asaba Expressway on August 29, 2026.
Her family subsequently paid ₦3 million as ransom, but she was allegedly not released, prompting police operatives to intensify their investigation.
“The lady was reportedly abducted along the Onitsha–Asaba Expressway on 29th August 2026. However, despite the payment of N3 million ransom by her family, she was allegedly not released, prompting further investigation by the Police,” Ikenga said.
The police spokesperson said sustained intelligence gathering eventually led officers to Asaba, Delta State, where the supposed kidnap victim was traced to a room and recovered on the afternoon of September 18.
“Following sustained intelligence gathering and investigative efforts, Police Operatives, in the afternoon of September 18, 2026, traced and located the alleged victim in a room in Asaba, Delta State, where she was recovered,” the statement said.
Police said preliminary investigation subsequently raised suspicion that the kidnapping had allegedly been staged.
“Preliminary findings from the investigation indicated that the lady allegedly conspired with a female associate identified as Onyinye, whose other names are yet to be established, and another male accomplice, whose identity is presently unknown, to stage her own kidnapping and obtain money from her family,” Ikenga stated.
The command said Blessing is currently assisting investigators with information aimed at establishing the full circumstances surrounding the incident and tracing the alleged accomplices.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Ama, has directed investigators to intensify efforts to determine the roles allegedly played by each person connected with the matter and ensure that anyone found culpable is dealt with in accordance with the law.
Police said the investigation is also expected to establish how the alleged ransom demand was coordinated, who received the ₦3 million and how the money was handled.
The allegations remain under investigation, and no court has yet determined the criminal liability of Blessing or the other persons named by the police.
