A man, Abubakar Lukman, has approached a Shari’a Court sitting in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, seeking an order compelling his former fiancée, Fatima Muhammad, to return items allegedly presented to her family ahead of their proposed marriage.

Lukman told the court on Tuesday that both families had participated in preparations for the wedding before he decided to terminate the engagement.

He alleged that he discovered certain habits in Muhammad which he could not tolerate in a wife, prompting him to call off the proposed marriage.

“Both our parents were involved in the preparations for the wedding. But I later discovered my wife to have some habits that I cannot condone in a wife. I decided to call off the wedding,” he told the court.

Lukman asked the court to order the return of foodstuffs, an electric kettle, a gas cylinder, a floor rug, sweets, buckets and dates allegedly presented during the marriage introduction.

Counsel to Muhammad, Sani Sanusi, denied that the items remained in his client’s possession, maintaining that they had already been returned to Lukman.

Following the conflicting submissions, the presiding judge, Yakubu Abdullahi, adjourned the matter until September 25 to enable Lukman to present witnesses or other evidence showing that the disputed items had not been returned.
