The Osun State House of Assembly has passed a bill amending the law establishing Osun State University, paving the way for the legislation to be transmitted to Governor Ademola Adeleke for assent.

The Osun State University Establishment Amendment Bill 2026 was passed on Thursday, September 3, during a plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun.

The amendment seeks, among other provisions, to permit a two-year extension of the tenure of the university’s Vice-Chancellor.

Its passage comes amid controversy surrounding Governor Adeleke’s approval of an additional two years for the incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, whose existing five-year tenure is expected to expire in January 2027.

The extension would allow Adebooye, who assumed office in January 2022, to remain in office until January 2029, subject to the amended legislation taking effect.

Under the existing Osun State University Establishment Law 2006, the Vice-Chancellor is appointed for a single term of five years. The governor’s decision to grant an extension had consequently raised questions about its compatibility with the subsisting law.

During Thursday’s proceedings, lawmakers dissolved into the Committee of the Whole and considered the proposed amendments clause by clause.

After completing the consideration, the Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Adekunle Emmanuel, moved that the House resolve out of the Committee of the Whole. The motion was seconded by Hon. Taofeek Olalekan Olayiwola, representing Ede South State Constituency.

The House also changed the title of the legislation from the “Osun State University Establishment Amendment Law 2026” to the “Osun State University Establishment Amendment Bill 2026.”

The bill was subsequently read for the third time and passed by the lawmakers.

It is expected to be transmitted to Governor Adeleke for assent after the completion of the necessary legislative procedures. The amendment will take effect only after receiving the governor’s assent.

The House thereafter adjourned its sitting until Monday, September 7, following a motion moved by the Deputy Majority Leader and seconded by Olayiwola.
