Two people have reportedly died following a violent attack at Filmhouse Cinemas IMAX in Lekki, Lagos, after an armed assailant allegedly attacked people at the premises in the early hours of the morning.

An eyewitness who survived the incident said moviegoers were trapped inside the cinema for more than an hour after the attackers allegedly blocked the exit, forcing patrons to seek safety in the bathroom while the violence unfolded.
According to the survivor, the incident occurred at about 1 a.m. after she had gone to the cinema to watch a movie.
She said two armed men blocked the only exit available to them, causing those inside to flee into the bathroom and pray for their safety.
“We were held hostage around 1 am by two armed men. The attackers blocked the only entry we had, which made us to run to the bathroom and pray. I never experienced fear like that in my life,” she recounted.
The survivor said the attackers moved around the premises wielding weapons and allegedly struck people during the incident.
“These men were swinging weapons up and down, sliding into people. They actually stabbed one man. He was unalived in the process,” she said.
She further alleged that emergency medical assistance was not immediately available, claiming it took about 35 minutes before a vehicle was provided to transport the injured man to a hospital.
According to her, by the time assistance arrived, the victim had lost a significant amount of blood.
“At this point, he had already bled out. Because innocent passers-by pulled out the knife in his chest, thinking it could save his life. But he bled out,” she said.
The eyewitness criticised what she described as inadequate emergency arrangements at the cinema, alleging that there was no accessible emergency exit, no immediate emergency medical response and no timely intervention by law enforcement officers.
“No emergency exit. No emergency services. No law enforcement to come to our rescue,” she said.
She also said confusion among people at the scene over how to respond to a stab injury may have worsened the condition of one of the victims.
“Nobody knew what to do in the event of a stab wound. Nobody knew not to pull out that knife, [which] cost the life of that man,” she said.
The survivor further claimed that after one of the alleged attackers was eventually apprehended, he allegedly stated that one of the victims had been specifically targeted.
“When they eventually caught the attacker, he mentioned that that particular man was his target,” she said.
The exact motive for the attack has not yet been publicly established, and the circumstances surrounding the deaths remain under investigation.
Filmhouse Cinemas has condemned the incident and confirmed that an investigation is ongoing.
The cinema operator also commended the deceased individuals for what it described as their bravery, saying their actions contributed to containing the situation and restoring safety at the premises.
Questions surrounding the number of attackers, how they gained access to the premises, the alleged blockage of the exit, the response time to the emergency and the survivor’s claims about the absence of adequate emergency measures are expected to form part of the investigation.
The authorities have yet to publicly disclose the identities of the victims or provide a full official account of the attack.
