The OK Movement, a political platform mobilising support for the joint presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 general elections, has rejected any plan to merge or absorb the organisation into another political body.

The group, which draws its membership largely from supporters associated with the Obidient Movement and Kwankwasiyya, also rejected reports of a move to remove its Director-General and founder, John Ughulu, insisting that its nationwide grassroots structure was built around his leadership.
The resolutions were contained in a communiqué issued on Friday following the Movement’s national leadership summit in Abuja and jointly signed by its Convener, Ladipo Johnson, and National Secretary, Sadaatu Sani.
The summit brought together national leaders, coordinators, state coordinators as well as local government and ward-level mobilisers drawn from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the communiqué, the Movement resolved to preserve its organisational independence while remaining open to cooperation with political and civic groups pursuing similar objectives.
“The Summit resolves that the OK Movement shall remain an independent organisation and shall not be merged into or absorbed by any external political body,” the communiqué stated.
It, however, stressed that retaining an independent identity would not prevent the Movement from working with allied organisations.
“Independence does not mean isolation: we remain ready to coordinate closely with allied groups in pursuit of shared goals,” it added.
Johnson explained that the leadership was concerned that an externally imposed merger or consolidation could disrupt programmes already being implemented across the country and undermine the identity and grassroots momentum the organisation had developed.
The position comes amid continuing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition politicians and groups exploring alliances, coalitions and other arrangements as preparations intensify for the contest.
The OK Movement also reaffirmed its confidence in Ughulu, describing him as central to the development of its organisational network.
According to the group, its structure was developed progressively from the ward level and depended substantially on the relationship between its founder and thousands of volunteers across the country.
“The Movement was built ward by ward, largely on the personal credibility of its founder with the volunteers who make up its ranks,” Johnson said.
“Our loyalty is not to a title, but to the man who recruited, trained and stood with us.”
The leadership warned that removing Ughulu as Director-General or abandoning the Movement’s independent status could destabilise its existing grassroots organisation.
“Should the Director-General be removed, or the Movement’s independence set aside, they have indicated that they would not continue to operate under the resulting arrangement,” Johnson stated.
The summit, however, moved to address internal disagreements within the Movement by extending an invitation to Ms Jacky Wayas to return as Director for Strategic Implementation and Planning under the leadership of the Director-General.
It also appointed Prince Suleiman Abubakar as Deputy Director-General for the North following the resignation of Amb. Muhammad Auwal Musa.
Following the summit, members of the leadership visited Kwankwaso at his Abuja residence to brief him on the resolutions reached at the meeting.
The delegation also visited Alhaji Buba Galadima, who heads the Movement’s Advisory Council.
According to the communiqué, Galadima reiterated the need for unity within the organisation and encouraged its leadership to preserve its independent structure.
“We also visited Alhaji Buba Galadima, the head of the movement’s Advisory Council, who reaffirmed the importance of unity within the movement and encouraged us to retain its independence,” the group said.
It further stated that Galadima cautioned against proposals to merge the Movement into the Nigeria Democratic Congress, irrespective of arguments that such an arrangement could improve organisational efficiency.
The Movement maintained that decisions concerning its future should reflect the wishes of its grassroots members.
“We hold the vision of a better Nigeria in the highest esteem and remain fully committed to that cause. We ask only that the collective will of the grassroots, freely expressed, be respected,” the communiqué stated.
The latest resolutions follow reports of internal disagreements within the Movement over its leadership structure, with competing positions and accusations emerging in recent weeks.
By reaffirming Ughulu’s leadership, retaining its organisational independence and simultaneously extending an olive branch to some aggrieved members, the Movement said it hoped to consolidate its grassroots network while continuing to support the Obi-Kwankwaso political project ahead of the 2027 elections.
