The Chairman of the National Population Commission, Dr. Aminu Yusuf, has reportedly died about eight months after assuming office.

Reports of his death emerged on Friday, although details surrounding the circumstances and location of his death had not been disclosed at the time of filing this report.
The National Population Commission and the Presidency had also not issued official statements confirming the development.
Yusuf, who held the traditional title of Talban Wushishi, was appointed by President Bola Tinubu in October 2025 to succeed Nasir Isa Kwarra, whose five-year tenure ended that month.
The Senate unanimously confirmed his appointment on October 21, 2025, following consideration of the report of its Committee on National Identity and National Population.
He formally assumed office on December 3, 2025, after being sworn in by President Tinubu at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Upon assuming office, Yusuf pledged to reposition the commission as a globally respected institution anchored on integrity, innovation and service delivery.
He identified the conduct of a credible population and housing census, digital transformation of the commission’s operations and strengthening of Nigeria’s civil registration system as some of his priorities.
Under his leadership, the commission began the nationwide implementation of digital birth and death registration through its electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics system.
Yusuf had also promised that the commission would conduct a transparent and generally acceptable national census whenever the Federal Government approved the exercise.
The commission is constitutionally responsible for collecting, analysing and publishing demographic data, conducting population censuses and registering births and deaths across Nigeria.
Yusuf’s reported death comes at a crucial period when the commission is preparing for a long-awaited national population and housing census and expanding its digital civil-registration programme.
