The Federal Executive Council has approved the acquisition and deployment of two next-generation high-throughput communications satellites, NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B, in a move aimed at expanding Nigeria’s satellite capacity, improving broadband coverage and strengthening critical communications services across the country.

The Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited disclosed the development in a statement signed by its Acting Head, Corporate Affairs Division, Stephen Kwande, saying the FEC approval had moved the project into its next phase.
According to NIGCOMSAT, the two satellites are expected to provide additional capacity for broadband, broadcasting, enterprise connectivity, government services and other emerging digital applications.
“The Federal Government has moved the acquisition and deployment of NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B into the next phase following Federal Executive Council approval for the two next-generation High-Throughput Communication Satellites,” the company said.
NIGCOMSAT will lead the implementation of the project under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.
A major objective of the planned deployment is to extend communications services to underserved, unserved and hard-to-reach communities, particularly locations where conventional telecommunications infrastructure is difficult or expensive to deploy.
The company said the satellites would also strengthen the resilience of Nigeria’s communications infrastructure and increase the country’s capacity to provide satellite-enabled services.
“The satellites, to be deployed by Nigeria Communications Satellite Limited, are designed to expand Nigeria’s satellite capacity and strengthen broadband, broadcasting, enterprise and critical communications services,” the statement said.
It added that the deployment was expected to “extend connectivity to underserved, unserved and hard-to-reach communities, strengthen national communications resilience and increase Nigeria’s capacity to deliver satellite e-enabled services.”
According to NIGCOMSAT, the project forms part of the Federal Government’s broader investment in digital infrastructure and national connectivity under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NIGCOMSAT, Jane Egerton-Idehen, described the FEC approval as a significant milestone for the company and Nigeria’s digital infrastructure development.
“This is a significant milestone for NIGCOMSAT and for Nigeria, and we commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the leadership and support that have enabled us to reach this stage,” she said.
Egerton-Idehen said the satellites would substantially strengthen the country’s communications capability and support services considered critical to businesses, government institutions and communities.
“NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B will strengthen our national satellite capacity, expand connectivity and support critical communications across the country,” she said.
She added that the company’s priority would be to ensure that the investment produces measurable benefits for Nigerians while strengthening NIGCOMSAT’s position in the international satellite and digital economy.
“Our priority is to translate this investment into measurable value for Nigerians and position NIGCOMSAT for stronger impact within the global satellite and digital economy,” she stated.
Beyond expanding broadband access, the additional satellite capacity is expected to support broadcasting services, enterprise communications, government operations and emerging technologies requiring reliable nationwide connectivity.
NIGCOMSAT said the satellites would complement rather than replace existing terrestrial broadband networks, providing wider coverage particularly in areas where fibre-optic networks, telecommunications towers and other conventional infrastructure are difficult or uneconomical to install.
The proposed satellites could therefore provide additional connectivity options for rural communities and remote locations while strengthening redundancy for critical national communications.
With the FEC approval secured, NIGCOMSAT is now expected to proceed with the next phase of the acquisition and deployment process under the supervision of the communications ministry.
