The All Progressives Congress has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, seeking the investigation, arrest and prosecution of Ogun State governorship aspirant Abayomi Hunye for allegedly presenting himself as the party’s candidate for the January 2027 governorship election.

The petition, dated August 24, 2026, was submitted to the Force Headquarters in Abuja and signed by the APC’s Director of Administration, Ayoola Olajolo.
It marks a further escalation of the dispute over the party’s Ogun State governorship ticket after the APC publicly disowned Hunye and reaffirmed Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as its candidate.
The party identified Kudirat Balogun as Adeola’s running mate.
In the petition, the APC accused Hunye of false representation, alleged impersonation and conduct capable of causing a breach of public peace. It also alleged that his actions violated provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
“The subject has notoriously and unlawfully taken to the public domain, including print and social media, parading himself as the governorship candidate of our party for the forthcoming January 2027 election,” the petition stated.
“I wish to state unequivocally that this claim is false, fraudulent, and a deliberate act of impersonation designed to mislead the public and destabilise the peace of Ogun State.”
The APC maintained that Hunye lacked the authority to represent the party because he was suspended on April 7, 2026, following a petition reportedly initiated by the executive committee of Tube Ward in Ipokia Local Government Area.
According to the party, the suspension was ratified at the local government level and by the Ogun State Working Committee before it was communicated to the party’s national headquarters.
The APC said Hunye was accused of engaging in anti-party activities, dealings allegedly injurious to the party’s image and interests, and deliberate actions capable of causing disaffection and division among members.
The party said it attached certified copies of the suspension letter and documents relating to its ratification to the police petition.
Its national leadership had earlier reiterated on August 24 that Hunye remained suspended and consequently lacked the authority to represent the party or claim its governorship ticket.
The APC further based its position on the governorship contest on the completion of its primary election and the submission of its candidates’ particulars to the Independent National Electoral Commission.
It maintained that Adeola validly emerged as its candidate after securing 304,055 votes from 305,287 accredited voters at the party’s governorship primary.
The party said Adeola’s particulars and those of his running mate were submitted to INEC on August 7, 2026, with the electoral commission issuing acknowledgement slips.
It argued that Hunye’s continued claim to the ticket could mislead voters, party members and other members of the public about the identity of its candidate.
The party’s national leadership had previously described Hunye as an “impostor” and warned individuals and organisations against conducting political transactions with him in relation to the governorship ticket.
In its petition, the APC asked the IGP to direct the appropriate police authorities to invite Hunye for questioning over the alleged offences.
“In view of the foregoing, I most respectfully pray that you use your good office to direct the immediate intervention of the Nigeria Police Force to invite Mr Abayomi Hunye for immediate questioning regarding the aforementioned infringements and probable commission of offences against Nigerian laws,” the party said.
It also requested that, following an investigation, Hunye be prosecuted for alleged impersonation, conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace and violations of the Electoral Act 2026.
The party further asked the police to restrain him from continuing to present himself as the APC governorship candidate, arguing that intervention was necessary to prevent a possible breakdown of law and order in Ogun State.
The APC pledged that its national and Ogun State structures would provide witness statements, documents and other evidence required by investigators.
Hunye has, however, rejected the allegation that he is unlawfully impersonating the party’s candidate.
Speaking on Channels Television’s *Politics Today* on Tuesday, he maintained that he was pursuing a legal challenge against the process through which Adeola emerged.
Hunye questioned why the party sold him a ₦50 million nomination form and allowed him to participate in its screening and primary election if he had been suspended before the nomination process.
“The first thing they said was that I had been suspended. They said I was suspended on April 7. How can you suspend me on April 7 and, on April 28, collect money from me and give me a form?” he asked.
“I got the nomination form and the expression of interest form. I filled everything and returned it. I have the receipt.”
Hunye claimed that he successfully completed the party’s screening exercise and that his name appeared as number 52 on the screening list.
He also said he was recognised as an aspirant during the APC governorship primary conducted on May 21.
Hunye had earlier demanded the cancellation of the primary, alleging irregularities and questioning how he recorded no vote despite claiming to have supporters across Ogun State’s 236 wards and 20 local government areas.
He also alleged that some APC leaders threatened him to withdraw from the contest, an allegation the party has not publicly admitted.
The dispute followed the APC’s decision to support Adeola, who represents Ogun West in the Senate, as its governorship candidate.
Governor Dapo Abiodun had in May presented Adeola to APC stakeholders in Ogun West as the party’s consensus candidate, explaining that the decision was intended to address what he described as a longstanding imbalance because the senatorial district had not produced a governor since Ogun State was created.
APC leaders in Hunye’s Tube Ward subsequently endorsed Adeola and rejected efforts to challenge the outcome of the governorship primary.
The party later selected Balogun as Adeola’s running mate after zoning the deputy governorship position to Ogun East Senatorial District.
The allegations in the petition remain unproven, and no public statement indicating that Hunye has been arrested, charged or found liable for any offence has been issued by the police.
