The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has said the true measure of public service should not be determined merely by the number of years spent in office, but by the institutions strengthened, policies advanced, systems developed, people mentored and enduring legacies left behind.

Fagbemi stated this on Saturday in Abuja at a send-off and appreciation ceremony organised by the Nigerian Copyright Commission to honour its former Directors-General and retired Directors for their contributions to the growth of the Commission and copyright administration in Nigeria.

The Attorney-General, who was represented at the event by the Director of Legal Drafting in the Federal Ministry of Justice, Patrick Oyor, described public service as a fundamental service to the nation and stressed that its value must ultimately be judged by its lasting impact.

According to him, the significance of a public officer’s service extends beyond the length of time spent occupying a position.

He said strengthening institutions, advancing policies, establishing effective systems, mentoring younger officers and leaving behind structures capable of serving future generations were among the proper measures of meaningful public service.

Fagbemi said the ceremony provided both the Nigerian Copyright Commission and the Federal Ministry of Justice with an important opportunity to formally recognise and appreciate the former Directors-General and retired Directors for their years of leadership, commitment and invaluable service to the country.

He noted that the honourees had, through their respective periods of service, contributed significantly to the institutional development of the NCC and the broader advancement of copyright administration in Nigeria.

The Minister said the Commission, as it exists today, was the product of the cumulative efforts of successive leaderships and generations of officers who devoted themselves to building the institution.

He therefore cautioned against viewing institutional progress solely through the tenure of any individual, stressing that sustainable public institutions are generally built through the contributions of successive leaders and dedicated personnel.

Fagbemi congratulated the former Directors-General and retired Directors on the recognition, describing the honour as well deserved.

He said their service had helped shape the Nigerian Copyright Commission and strengthen the country’s copyright administration framework, adding that such contributions represented the kind of legacy by which public service should ultimately be assessed.

The Attorney-General’s remarks underscored the importance of institutional continuity in public administration, with emphasis on leaving behind stronger structures, improved policies and capable personnel rather than merely counting the number of years spent in office.
