The State Security Service has arrested a man identified as Moferewa Maiye in Abuja for allegedly impersonating an operative of the Service and using a tactical uniform and fake pistol to intimidate and extort members of the public.

Maiye was reportedly arrested late on Wednesday after SSS operatives trailed him to a hideout around NITEL Junction, along Adetokunbo Ademola Way, Wuse II, Abuja.

According to a security source, the suspect was wearing an SSS tactical uniform and was allegedly in possession of a fake pistol at the time of his arrest.

The source said the Service acted on intelligence that Maiye had allegedly been presenting himself as an SSS operative and using the uniform and fake weapon to intimidate commuters and motorists and obtain money from them.

Maiye reportedly told investigators that he was from Agbajojun Village in Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi State.

During interrogation, he was said to have claimed that the tactical uniform and other SSS items found in his possession belonged to his late brother, whom he identified as Monday Maiye.

According to the suspect’s account, his brother was an SSS operative who died several years ago.

Investigators are, however, probing the circumstances under which Maiye came into possession of the security uniform and other items.

The source said the Service was also seeking to determine how long the suspect had allegedly been involved in impersonation and whether there were other instances in which he used the uniform to intimidate or extort members of the public.

“Investigators are also trying to establish how long the suspect has been involved in similar acts of impersonation and extortion,” the source said.

The source added that the arrest reflected growing concern within the Service about individuals who allegedly impersonate security personnel and exploit such false identities to intimidate citizens or commit offences.

“The arrest underscores growing concerns by the Service over the activities of individuals who impersonate security personnel to intimidate members of the public and commit criminality,” the source stated.

Maiye remains in custody and is being interrogated as investigations continue into the source of the tactical uniform, the alleged acts of impersonation and extortion, and whether other persons may have been involved.

The allegations against him remain subject to investigation and have not been established by a court.
