The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ordered an investigation into some directors of the Federal Capital Territory Administration over alleged illegal approvals permitting parks, gardens and designated green areas in Abuja to be converted into car dealership lots.

Wike also directed the immediate stoppage of the practice and approved the establishment of a task force to enforce the directive and ensure that affected public spaces are restored to their approved purposes.
The directive was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.
According to the statement, officials summoned in connection with the investigation include the Directors of Parks and Recreation, Environmental Protection, Traffic Management and Urban Affairs.
The affected directors have been summoned by the FCT Head of Service, Nancy Sabanti Nathan, as authorities seek to establish how approvals were allegedly granted for areas designated for parks, recreation and environmental purposes to be used for car sales.
Wike expressed concern over what the FCT Administration described as the growing conversion of green areas across the Federal Capital City into unauthorised commercial spaces.
The Minister particularly frowned at the use of areas designated for parks and recreation, including the Millennium Park and other green spaces, as car dealership lots.
“The Minister, who decried the use of areas designated for parks and recreation like the Millennium Park and others as car lots, directed that all unauthorised use of such areas will be closely monitored to ensure compliance,” the statement said.
The FCT Administration said the crackdown forms part of measures aimed at addressing flooding in parts of Abuja and protecting spaces specifically designated under the city’s master plan for environmental and recreational purposes.
Wike consequently directed that all unauthorised commercial activities on parks, gardens and green areas should cease immediately.
A task force has also been established to monitor the affected locations, enforce compliance and prevent further conversion of designated public spaces into car lots or other unauthorised commercial facilities.
The investigation ordered by the Minister is expected to determine the circumstances under which the alleged approvals were issued and identify officials responsible for permitting the conversion of the affected spaces.
The Administration is also expected to establish whether the alleged approvals complied with applicable land-use regulations and administrative procedures.
The latest directive comes as the FCT Administration intensifies enforcement against developments and activities considered inconsistent with the Abuja Master Plan.
Wike had earlier warned against developments obstructing waterways and the conversion of designated green areas, particularly as the Administration confronts flooding in some parts of the Federal Capital City.
The Minister has maintained that enforcement measures would apply irrespective of the status or influence of persons affected where developments violate approved land-use purposes.
The FCTA said the latest action was aimed at preserving Abuja’s parks, gardens and green areas, ensuring compliance with approved land-use plans and preventing unauthorised commercial activities from worsening environmental challenges in the capital.
The officials being investigated have not been declared guilty of wrongdoing, and the probe is expected to establish whether illegal approvals were in fact granted and determine responsibility where violations are established.
