The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated the ban on the participation of Amotekun and other non-state security organisations in security operations connected with Saturday’s Osun State governorship election.

The Force also announced a statewide restriction of movement from 12:00 midnight on Friday, August 14, 2026, until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, as part of measures to secure the election.
Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, disclosed this in a statement issued from the Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Friday.
According to the Police, only security agencies established and recognised under the Constitution and laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria are authorised to perform security and law-enforcement duties alongside the Nigeria Police Force during the election.
The Force specifically warned Amotekun, vigilante organisations and other unauthorised security groups to stay away from election-related security operations.
It said no non-state security organisation would be permitted to assume or exercise functions reserved for constitutionally and legally recognised security agencies.
“Accordingly, such groups are directed to stay away from election-related security operations and refrain from any activity capable of intimidating voters, disrupting the electoral process or undermining public peace and security,” the Police said.
The Force said the restriction of movement beginning at midnight on Friday and ending at 6:00 p.m. on election day was part of comprehensive security measures intended to ensure a peaceful and orderly governorship election.
Members of the public were urged to comply with the restriction and cooperate with security personnel deployed across Osun State.
The Police said only persons and categories specifically exempted by the appropriate authorities would be permitted to move during the restricted period.
Political parties, candidates, supporters and other election stakeholders were also cautioned against activities capable of provoking violence or disrupting voting.
The Force urged them to conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly throughout the electoral process.
It reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining security and providing a level playing field for political actors and eligible voters participating in the governorship election.
Residents were equally advised to remain calm and law-abiding and to report suspicious or unlawful activities to constitutionally and legally recognised security agencies.
The governorship election is scheduled to hold across Osun State on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
