The Body of Benchers has formally admitted 6,009 new legal practitioners to the Nigerian Bar following the July 2026 Call to Bar ceremonies held at the Body of Benchers Complex in Abuja.

The four-day ceremony commenced on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, and concluded on Friday, July 10, marking the enrolment of the successful candidates as Barristers and Solicitors of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

Presenting the results of the December 2025 Bar Final Examinations, the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Dr Olugbemisola Titilayo Odusote, disclosed that 7,601 candidates sat for the examinations.

According to the results, 212 candidates graduated with First Class Honours, 1,216 obtained Second Class Upper Division, 2,958 earned Second Class Lower Division, while 1,617 graduated with a Pass.

Odusote explained that the 6,009 lawyers called to the Bar comprised 6,000 successful candidates from the December 2025 Bar Final Examinations, two backlog candidates from the February 2025 Bar Finals and seven candidates from previous Call to Bar exercises.

The admission of more than 6,000 lawyers in a single call has, however, renewed concerns about the increasingly competitive Nigerian legal-services market and the capacity of the profession to provide sustainable opportunities for its growing number of entrants.

With thousands of lawyers admitted annually, newly called practitioners are expected to compete for limited positions in law firms, corporate legal departments, public institutions and the judiciary, amid longstanding concerns over inadequate remuneration, unemployment and underemployment within the profession.

The situation may also result in some of the newly admitted lawyers pursuing careers outside conventional legal practice, including business, technology, compliance, finance, public administration, politics and other professional fields.

Although no official figure was provided on how many of the 6,009 new lawyers may eventually leave active legal practice, previous experience suggests that not every person called to the Bar remains in litigation or traditional law practice throughout their career.

The growing number of entrants therefore underlines the need for the profession to expand emerging areas of practice, improve career development opportunities and create an environment in which young lawyers can earn sustainable livelihoods.

The Chairman of the Body of Benchers, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje, SAN, urged the new lawyers to uphold the Rules of Professional Conduct, embrace mentorship and pursue success through diligence and hard work.

He also cautioned them against the “get-rich-quick” mentality, stressing that integrity, discipline and commitment remained essential to building successful careers in the legal profession.

The Nigerian Law School assured the Body of Benchers that it would continue to uphold the ethics, standards and integrity of the profession through rigorous legal education and professional training.
