A UK-based Nigerian legal practitioner, Baron Chymaker, says he has formally commenced the process of renouncing his Nigerian citizenship.

Chymaker disclosed this in a post on X on Thursday, stating that his lawyer in Nigeria had confirmed the submission of his application to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF.

According to him, all required fees for the process had also been paid.

“I have today received a confirmation from my lawyer in Nigeria that my application to renounce my Nigerian citizenship has been submitted to the SGF and all fees paid as appropriate. I cannot wait for the approval,” he wrote.

Chymaker, who is based in the United Kingdom, is known on X for his commentaries on international law, Nigerian and UK legal practice, cryptocurrency and the Nigerian justice system.

His decision comes after repeated public criticism of Nigeria’s judicial system and legal practice environment.

He has, at different times, criticised the application of judicial precedent in Nigerian courts and described some outcomes in election-related disputes as unfair.

The lawyer has also urged Nigerian-trained lawyers to consider advanced courses and opportunities in more developed legal jurisdictions, a position he has frequently expressed on his social media platform.

Reports said the application was submitted through his Nigerian lawyer and is now awaiting approval from the relevant authorities.

Under Nigerian law, renunciation of citizenship is a formal process and does not take effect merely by public declaration. It requires an application to the appropriate government authority and official approval before the person ceases to be a Nigerian citizen.

As of the time of this report, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation had not issued any public statement confirming receipt or approval of Chymaker’s application.

Chymaker’s announcement has since generated reactions on social media, with some users supporting his decision while others questioned the significance of publicly renouncing Nigerian citizenship.

The development adds to ongoing conversations about migration, dual nationality, public dissatisfaction with governance and the growing number of Nigerian professionals seeking legal, economic and personal opportunities abroad.
