The United States military has launched a fresh wave of attacks on Iran in retaliation for alleged Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

The U.S. Central Command, CENTCOM, announced the strikes on Tuesday, saying they were aimed at imposing “heavy costs” on Iran for targeting commercial shipping in an international waterway.

According to CENTCOM, the U.S. action followed attacks on three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic maritime route through which about 20 percent of the world’s oil passed before the war.

The U.S. military described Iran’s alleged action as unwarranted, dangerous and a violation of the ceasefire.

The latest attacks come while U.S. and Iranian officials have been negotiating over maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has reportedly argued that it has the right to charge fees on ships passing through the waterway.

A U.S. official said the strikes, which continued into Tuesday evening, were bigger than previous retaliatory attacks against Iran.

The targets reportedly include Iranian air defence systems, coastal surveillance sites, surface-to-air missile sites, anti-ship cruise missile sites, drone launch sites and port facilities.

The strikes are being carried out by U.S. Air Force jets and Navy tactical aircraft, according to the official.

In a related move, the U.S. also revoked a temporary sanctions waiver that had allowed the sale of Iranian oil on the global market. The revocation, listed by the U.S. Treasury Department, took immediate effect and directed that any production, delivery or sale of Iranian oil must be wound down by July 17.

The waiver had earlier allowed such sales to continue until August 21.

The latest escalation followed reports that one tanker, travelling off the coast of Oman, was hit and caught fire. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations centre confirmed the incident.

Iranian state television said the liquefied natural gas tanker came under attack after allegedly ignoring warnings, but did not directly claim responsibility for the assault.

Two other ships reportedly sustained damage, although no injuries were recorded, and both vessels continued their journey.

Following the developments, oil prices surged from around $69 to nearly $73, representing an increase of about six percent after weeks of relative calm in the oil market.

A similar exchange occurred in late June when Iran allegedly attacked a commercial ship in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting the U.S. military to retaliate with attacks on what it described as military targets in and around the strait. Iran later escalated the situation with attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait.

The renewed hostilities have raised concerns over the possibility of reaching a lasting agreement to end the war launched by the U.S. and Israel on February 28.

President Donald Trump and Iranian officials had signed a memorandum of understanding in mid-June, triggering a 60-day negotiation window aimed at securing a broader deal.
