The International Criminal Court has reportedly scheduled a vote for July 24, 2026, on whether to remove its Chief Prosecutor, Karim Khan, from office following findings of alleged serious misconduct.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing diplomats and documents, that the full governing body of the ICC will consider whether Khan should be formally removed after the court’s executive bureau reportedly found that allegations against him were credible.

Reuters had earlier reported, citing a diplomatic source, that the executive bureau of the Assembly of States Parties, the court’s governing body, concluded that Khan committed serious misconduct after an 18-month probe into allegations that he had non-consensual sexual interactions with a lawyer in his office.

The matter has thrown the court into one of the most serious leadership crises in its history, given Khan’s prominent role in high-profile international investigations and arrest warrant applications.

According to reports, the allegations against Khan were examined in an independent United Nations-led probe, which allegedly found a serious breach of duty in connection with the complaint involving a female lawyer in his office.

Khan, who has been on leave of absence since May, has denied any wrongdoing. His legal team has reportedly rejected the findings, describing them as flawed, unlawful and procedurally unfair.

The ICC’s 21-nation oversight bureau was also reported to have suspended Khan on June 8, 2026, pending the outcome of the wider process before the court’s full governing body.

The July 24 session is expected to take place at the United Nations headquarters in New York. For Khan to be removed, a two-thirds majority of the ICC’s 125 member states would first have to uphold the misconduct finding, after which an absolute majority vote of at least 63 states would be required to strip him of office.

The reported process is significant because the removal of a sitting ICC prosecutor would be an extraordinary step for the court and could have institutional consequences for its leadership, credibility and ongoing prosecutions.

However, diplomats cited in the reports said Khan’s possible removal would not automatically affect the legal standing of arrest warrants previously issued during his tenure.

Those warrants include high-profile cases involving Russian President Vladimir Putin, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas leaders.

The warrants would remain active unless they are specifically set aside or quashed by the ICC’s appeals judges.

The development comes at a sensitive period for the court, which has faced intense international scrutiny over its investigations and decisions in conflicts involving Russia, Ukraine, Israel, Gaza and other situations before the tribunal.

The forthcoming vote is therefore expected to test not only Khan’s future as prosecutor but also the ICC’s ability to address internal accountability issues while maintaining confidence in its judicial processes.
