The Governing Council of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University has dismissed five staff members over alleged gross misconduct.

The decision was taken at the 122nd meeting of the 8th Governing Council of the university held on Friday, June 12, 2026.

Those dismissed include Prof. C. C. Nwabachili, immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Law, and Prof. Chike Osegbue of the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences.

Also dismissed were Dr. I. H. Iheukwumere and Mr. Emeka Nwabunnia, both of the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Uli Campus.

According to a statement issued by the university, Dr. Iheukwumere and Mr. Nwabunnia were dismissed over allegations bordering on sexual abuse, harassment, intimidation, extortion and other ethical misconduct.

The Council also dismissed Mrs. Ifeoma Kakulu, a Principal Assistant Registrar, who served as Examination Officer for the Faculty of Law in the Exams Unit at the Igbariam Campus at the time the offence was allegedly committed.

The university said the decision was part of the Council’s commitment to discipline, integrity and accountability within the institution.

In the statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the university, Dr. Harrison Madubueze, MNIPR, the Council warned that actions capable of tarnishing the image and reputation of the university would attract severe consequences.

The Council also reaffirmed its resolve to maintain a safe, accountable and forward-looking academic environment in line with the institution’s vision of building what it described as “a Now University and of the Future.”

The development came as the 122nd meeting of the 8th Governing Council also approved the elevation of 13 academic staff to the rank of professor.

The meeting, therefore, ended with major decisions affecting both staff discipline and academic career progression in the university.

According to the university, while 13 academic staff were promoted to the professorial cadre, five staff members were dismissed from the institution for misconduct.

The statement was dated June 13, 2026.
