United States President Donald Trump angrily walked out of an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press after a tense exchange with host Kristen Welker over his repeated claim that the 2020 presidential election was rigged.

The interview, which aired on Sunday, became heated after Welker pressed Trump to provide evidence for his assertion that the election was “stolen.”

Trump rejected the question and accused Welker and major American media organisations of dishonesty and bias.

“The elections are like a third world country. Your elections are crooked, and you’re crooked, and Meet the Press is crooked, and so is ABC, CBS and CNN,” Trump said.

As Welker attempted to continue the interview, Trump declared that he had had enough.

“You’re one-sided crooked networks. Let’s call it quits,” he said.

“I’ve had enough, thank you darling, have a good time,” Trump added as he stood up to leave.

Welker pleaded with him to stay, saying she had travelled to Wisconsin for the exclusive interview.

“Mr President, please, I travelled all the way to Wisconsin,” she said.

Trump replied, “I’ve sat in the rain with you for an hour, on and off in the rain. I’ve given you enough time.

“You ought to straighten out your press. You know what? A country can never be great with a dishonest press. Let’s go.”

The exchange escalated after Welker questioned Trump about a proposed $1.8 billion fund for people who claimed they were targeted by the Biden administration’s alleged “weaponisation” of government.

Welker asked whether Trump was abandoning the plan after acting Attorney General Todd Blanche reportedly said the administration would not pursue it.

Trump defended the proposal, claiming people were badly harmed by officials in the previous administration.

“People have been hurt so badly by radical left lunatics that worked for the Biden administration and Sleepy Joe,” he said.

“They’re vicious. They’re violent, what they did to people. And, of course, they went after me more than anybody else.”

When Welker told him there was no evidence for some of his claims, Trump insisted there was “tremendous evidence” and shifted the discussion back to the 2020 election.

“There’s a lot of evidence, listen to me. There’s tremendous evidence. There’s nothing but evidence,” he said.

Trump then repeated that the 2020 election was rigged before ending the interview and walking off set.

Before the confrontation, Trump also discussed the continuing conflict involving Iran, saying he was not ruling out sending American forces into Iran to retrieve and destroy highly enriched uranium if a deal was reached.

According to him, any such operation would be carried out safely and could involve U.S. equipment.

“If we make a deal, if we make a deal now we’re friendly, we’ll all go together. It’ll be our equipment. We’ll take it out and destroy it, whether it’s onsite or whether we take it offsite,” Trump said.

He added that if no agreement was reached, the United States could act militarily.

“We will go with them, or without them. But we won’t have people shooting at us,” he said.

“Now, if we don’t make a deal, then we’re going to take them out militarily very harshly.”

The interview ended abruptly after the confrontation over the 2020 election and Trump’s attack on what he called the “dishonest press.”
