Israel says its air force has carried out strikes on Iranian military targets in western and central Iran, hours after Tehran launched missiles toward Israeli territory.

The Israel Defense Forces, IDF, said early Monday that the Israeli Air Force struck targets belonging to what it described as the “Iranian terror regime.” The military did not immediately provide full details of the targets hit or the extent of damage.

The strikes came after the IDF said Iran launched multiple missiles toward Israel on Sunday, marking the first such attack from Tehran since a ceasefire was reached in April.

According to the IDF, Israeli air defence systems were activated to intercept the missiles, while residents in affected areas were instructed through cellphone alerts to move to protected spaces and remain there until further notice.

“The public is asked to act responsibly and follow the instructions — they save lives,” the IDF said.

Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, said Israel was targeting Iranian surface-to-surface missile launch sites and other military infrastructure not connected to the energy sector.

Leiter claimed that Iran fired 11 ballistic missiles at Israel, adding that no country would tolerate such an attack.

“No self-respecting country in the world would tolerate such an attack, and neither will Israel,” he said.

The IDF also said a missile was launched from Yemen toward Israeli territory, adding that Israeli aerial defence systems were working to intercept it. Reports later indicated there were no casualties or impact from the launch.

The latest escalation followed Israeli airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut, which Israel said were carried out in retaliation for alleged Hezbollah attacks.

Following the Iranian missile launches, the United States Embassy in Jerusalem directed US government employees and their family members to shelter in place and be prepared to move to protected shelters in the event of red alert sirens.

The embassy also announced that consular sections in Jerusalem and the Embassy Branch Office in Tel Aviv would be closed on Monday.

In Iran, state media reported explosions in parts of western Tehran, while blasts were also reported in Tehran, Tabriz and Isfahan. The Tehran fire department, however, said no urban areas in the capital had been targeted.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed that Israel used ballistic missiles in the strikes, though details on the number of targets hit or possible casualties were not immediately clear.

The escalation comes amid efforts by the United States to push both sides toward a broader agreement. President Donald Trump said the parties were “very close” to signing a deal, though some issues were still being negotiated.

Trump said one of the sticking points was ensuring that Iran would not have the right to develop, acquire or purchase nuclear weapons.

Reports also indicated that Trump attempted to discourage Israel from retaliating further, saying the two sides had already exchanged strikes and that further escalation was unnecessary.

The latest exchange has raised fresh concerns that the fragile ceasefire could unravel, widening the conflict and increasing instability across the Middle East.
