Senior Advocate of Nigeria and presidential candidate in the 2026 Nigerian Bar Association elections, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, has said Nigeria’s democratic future depends on strong institutions, credible electoral processes, courageous leadership and smart policies that serve the people.

Akangbe stated this while participating as a discussant at the 2026 Law Week of the NBA Abuja Branch, also known as the Unity Bar.

The Law Week was held under the theme, “Safeguarding Nigeria’s Democratic Process,” with Akangbe speaking on the sub-theme, “Driving Sustainable Economic Growth Through Smart Policies.”

Reflecting on his participation, Akangbe said he spoke from a place of deep conviction that the future of the Nigerian Bar and the country depends on lawyers taking active roles in governance, democracy, rule of law and economic reform.

According to him, lawyers occupy a strategic position in shaping governance, defending democracy, protecting the rule of law and advancing policies capable of stimulating sustainable economic growth.

“As lawyers, we occupy a strategic position in shaping governance, defending democracy, protecting the rule of law, and advancing reforms that will stimulate sustainable economic growth,” he said.

He added that the legal profession must continue to stand boldly for justice, accountability and responsible leadership.

Akangbe said the response he received from members of the Unity Bar was overwhelming, noting that the applause and engagement reflected a growing desire among lawyers for purposeful leadership, progressive ideas and a Bar that speaks strongly for its members and the nation.

“The applause was loud, the response was genuine, and the message was received clearly,” he said.

“Beyond the applause, I felt the growing desire among lawyers for purposeful leadership, progressive ideas, and a Bar that will speak strongly for its members and for the nation.”

He expressed gratitude to the leadership and members of the NBA Abuja Branch for the warm reception, engaging conversations and the opportunity to share his thoughts on issues central to the future of the legal profession and Nigeria’s democracy.

Akangbe said his vision is to help build a Bar that is respected, progressive, inclusive and courageous enough to lead from the front.

“Together, we will build a Bar that is respected, progressive, inclusive, and courageous enough to lead from the front,” he stated.
