Kwame Ohene Frimpong, the lawmaker representing the Asante Akyem North Constituency in the Parliament of Ghana, has been detained at Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands.

Frimpong was said to have been arrested over the weekend in connection with an investigation reportedly linked to the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

According to GhanaWeb, the investigation is connected to allegations of money laundering and romance scam to the tune of $32 million.

In a statement on Tuesday, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the Clerk to the Parliament of Ghana, confirmed Frimpong’s arrest.

Djietror said Parliament is engaging with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague to obtain detailed information on the matter.

“It has come to the attention of Parliament that the Hon. Member for Asante Akyem North Constituency, Mr. Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has been detained at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam, in the Netherlands,” the statement read.

“The Rt. Hon. Speaker and the leadership of the House are in touch with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague for detailed information on the matter. The public will be duly informed appropriately on this matter.”

In October 2025, Frimpong denied allegations that he was involved in a scam used to defraud people.

The lawmaker said his name was being used to defraud people in a travel and visa scheme.
