Mali’s Defence Minister, Sadio Camara, has reportedly been killed in a coordinated wave of attacks on military targets across the country.

Camara was said to have died after a vehicle-borne explosive detonated outside his residence in Kati, a heavily fortified garrison town about 15 kilometres northwest of Bamako, where interim President Assimi Goïta and other junta leaders reside.

The attack occurred on Saturday when jihadist fighters linked to al-Qaeda and Tuareg rebel groups launched simultaneous assaults nationwide, including on the junta stronghold in Kati. The attackers reportedly carried out a suicide car bombing that destroyed the defence minister’s residence, killing Camara and at least three members of his family.

Camara was a key figure in Mali’s military government, which seized power following coups in 2020 and 2021. His death comes amid a broader escalation in violence across the country.

In northern Mali, fighting resumed in Kidal on Sunday, further highlighting the deteriorating security situation.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Almaouloud Ramadane, spokesperson for the Front for the Liberation of Azawad (FLA), disclosed that an agreement had been reached between Azawad forces and elements of the Russian Africa Corps to ensure their safe withdrawal from ongoing clashes.

He added that some fighters from the GATIA group led by General El Hadj Ag Gamou, including Salam Ag Abanassa, had defected, while Malian army units stationed in former MINUSMA camps were under sustained attacks aimed at forcing them out of their positions.

The Russian Africa Corps described the coordinated attacks as an attempted coup, alleging involvement of “Western intelligence services.” The group claimed that between 10,000 and 12,000 armed fighters targeted key facilities, including the presidential palace, during the assaults.

It also alleged that Ukrainian and European elements participated in the attacks, though no evidence has been provided to support the claims. Both Ukrainian and European authorities have yet to respond to the allegations.

The European Union, however, condemned the attacks, expressing solidarity with the Malian people and reaffirming its commitment to combating terrorism and promoting stability in the Sahel.

The Africa Corps further claimed that its forces repelled the attacks, maintained control of key positions, and killed over 1,000 militants, while acknowledging that the security situation in Mali remains fragile and that some of its personnel were injured during the clashes.
