Operatives of the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ikoyi, have commenced an investigation into a suspected fake lawyer, John Anoruo, over alleged possession and use of a forged seal of the Nigerian Bar Association in Lagos.

Anoruo, who reportedly operates a legal and educational consultancy in the Ikorodu area of the state, was arrested by EFCC operatives on Monday, April 20, 2026.

The case, according to the Commission, originated from a petition dated September 22, 2025, which Anoruo submitted to the EFCC on behalf of his clients against the management of Global West Vessel Specialist Nigeria Limited.

However, investigations by the anti-graft agency revealed that both the petition and a subsequent Letter of Withdrawal dated March 5, 2026, were affixed with a forged NBA seal.

During interrogation, Anoruo reportedly confessed that he obtained the forged seal from an undisclosed business centre in Lagos.

Further findings indicated that the 55-year-old suspect claimed to have obtained a law degree in 2018 from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, through evening classes but admitted that he did not attend the Nigerian Law School, a mandatory requirement for legal practice in Nigeria.

The EFCC said the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The development ongoing efforts by the Commission to clamp down on impersonation and fraudulent activities within the legal profession.
