Former presidential adviser Professor Udenta O Udenta has criticised the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alleging that insecurity and economic challenges have worsened under the current government while also predicting that a strong opposition alliance could unseat the president in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Sunday Politics on Channels TV Sunday Politics, Udenta argued that insecurity, which was largely concentrated in the North-East during the administration of Muhammadu Buhari, has now spread to other regions, including the North-West and North-Central.

“Insecurity was much more rooted in the North-East; he has expanded it to the North-West, North-Central, and everywhere,” he said.

Udenta maintained that several of Nigeria’s current socio-economic challenges ranging from rising poverty and currency instability to declining living standards originated under the previous administration but have intensified significantly under Tinubu.

“The failures of the Muhammadu Buhari presidency are the failures of the Bola Tinubu presidency,” he stated, adding that the current government has accelerated the country’s economic decline.

He pointed to the depreciation of the naira, worsening fuel conditions, and the erosion of living standards as evidence of deepening hardship, noting that Nigeria’s status as the “poverty capital of the world” has been exacerbated in recent years.

Beyond governance concerns, Udenta also weighed in on the political outlook ahead of 2027, suggesting that President Tinubu’s re-election bid could face serious challenges.

According to him, a strategic North-South political alliance involving Peter Obi and a strong northern candidate could pose a formidable threat to the ruling party.

He further criticised the ideological foundation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a coalition formed primarily to unseat the Peoples Democratic Party in 2015, rather than a movement grounded in clear philosophical direction.

Drawing a contrast, he said earlier political platforms such as the Alliance for Democracy had stronger ideological underpinnings.

Udenta concluded that given the current state of governance, security, and economic conditions, a well-coordinated opposition coalition could capitalise on public dissatisfaction and defeat the incumbent government in the next general election.
