The Ebonyi State Police Command has warned its officers and men against undue interference in civil matters, particularly land disputes, as part of efforts to improve professionalism and public trust in policing.

The warning was issued during a briefing in Abakaliki by the Commissioner of Police, Hope Okafor, who addressed area commanders, divisional police officers (DPOs), heads of departments, and other senior officers, through the Command’s spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu.

Okafor cautioned officers against arbitrary detention of suspects beyond the legally permitted period, stressing the need to respect the fundamental rights and dignity of persons in custody.

She emphasised that profiling citizens based on appearance, indiscriminate search of personal devices such as mobile phones, and other intrusive practices were unacceptable.

“There is an urgent need for officers to adopt professional conduct that will inspire public trust and confidence,” the commissioner said.

The police chief also urged officers to align with the reform agenda of the Inspector-General of Police aimed at repositioning the Nigeria Police Force and restoring public confidence.

She specifically warned against extortion and misconduct, including soliciting or collecting money from members of the public on the roads, operating illegal checkpoints, and engaging in practices that encourage corruption.

“We must comply with the directive of the IGP. Do not solicit or collect money from members of the public on the roads. Stop operating illegal checkpoints,” she said.

Okafor further cautioned officers against arresting citizens to force withdrawals from Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), as well as engaging in unauthorised VIP escort duties contrary to official directives.

She also warned against indiscipline in appearance, including improper dressing and poor personal grooming, stating that such conduct would no longer be tolerated within the command.
