Former senator representing Zamfara Central, Kabiru Marafa, has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing alleged political manipulation and growing concerns over the state of Nigeria’s democracy.

Marafa, who served as coordinator of the Tinubu/Shettima 2023 Campaign in Zamfara State, announced his decision on Thursday following what his team described as extensive consultations with political allies and stakeholders.

According to a statement issued by his media aide, Mansur Haruna, the move was reached after a strategic meeting held in Kaduna State, where the former lawmaker resolved to align with the ADC as a new political platform.

Explaining his defection, Marafa accused the ruling APC of engaging in “political manipulations,” including alleged attempts to exploit the National Identification Number database for partisan political registration.

He also criticised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alleging efforts to create confusion and instability within opposition political parties.

“After careful deliberations and consideration of the future direction of the political movement, Senator Marafa formally declared his decision to align with the African Democratic Congress,” the statement read.

Marafa described his move as a firm commitment to liberate Nigerians from what he termed “political bondage,” insisting that no amount of pressure would deter his political movement.

The former senator called on residents of Zamfara State to rally behind the ADC, which he described as a credible platform for political transformation, accountability, and good governance.

He disclosed plans to return to his hometown to complete the formalities of his resignation from the APC and secure his membership of the ADC, followed by a major gathering of supporters in Gusau, the state capital.

Marafa’s defection comes against the backdrop of his longstanding political battles within the APC, including disputes with former governor Abdulaziz Yari and Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, over control of the party structure in the state.

His political history in the APC also includes a legal challenge to the party’s 2019 governorship primaries, which culminated in a Supreme Court ruling that nullified APC victories in Zamfara and awarded the seats to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The latest development also comes amid internal disputes within the ADC following recent court rulings affecting factional leadership within the party.
