The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Abia State University branch, has suspended its ongoing industrial action and directed members to resume academic duties with immediate effect from Friday, August 28, 2026.

The decision was reached at a congress meeting of the union on Friday, where members reviewed developments surrounding the issues that led to the strike and resolved to return to work while continuing to press for the resolution of outstanding matters.
In a statement jointly signed by the branch Chairperson, Dr Chidi S. Mba, and Secretary, Dr Victor U. Obisike, ASUU-ABSU, however, expressed concern over the continued suspension of Prof Nnamdi Nwaeze.
The union gave the university management until Friday, September 4, 2026, to recall Nwaeze and lift his suspension, warning that failure to comply could lead to a resumption of the industrial action.
“We are giving the university management up to Friday, September 4, 2026, to recall Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze and lift his suspension,” the union said.
“The failure by management to comply within this stipulated period would leave us with no option but to resume the suspended industrial action.”
While directing lecturers to return to their academic responsibilities immediately, the union urged members to remain united and committed as it continued engagements over unresolved issues affecting them.
“We urge our members to remain united and committed to the ideals of our union as we continue to pursue the resolution of outstanding issues affecting us,” the statement added.
The branch leadership also thanked members for what it described as their unity, resilience, commitment and support throughout the period of the strike.
“Your steadfastness and collective resolve have been invaluable to the progress recorded,” the union said.
ASUU-ABSU further reminded members that only the branch chairperson was authorised to speak officially on behalf of the union, directing anyone seeking clarification on the development to contact the chairperson.
The suspension of the strike clears the way for the immediate resumption of academic activities at Abia State University, although the union’s September 4 deadline means the dispute over Nwaeze’s suspension remains unresolved and could determine whether industrial action returns.
