The House of Representatives ad-hoc committee investigating accrued benefits from concessioning of the nation’s air and sea ports and related terminals from 2026 to 2025 has warned that it will not tolerate fake information from port concessionaires and government agencies.

Chairman of the Committee, Kolawole Davidson Akinlayo who spoke Tuesday during an investigative hearing with stakeholders at the National Assembly in Abuja described the exercise as a critical phase in the committee’s assignment.

The committee had earlier raised an alarm alleging that government agencies and concessionaires were trying to frustrate the efforts of the committee by hoarding critical information from them

Akinlayo said, “This session marks a critical phase in the Committee’s assignment. Today, we shall engage directly with terminal operators whose roles have been central to the concession regime introduced nearly two decades ago.

“That policy shift was designed to enhance efficiency, attract private sector investment, improve infrastructure, and ultimately deliver measurable economic benefits to the Federal Government and the Nigerian people.

“As representatives of these concessionaire entities, your presence is both necessary and appreciated. This hearing provides an opportunity to present factual, verifiable accounts of your operations, investments, compliance with concession agreements, and the overall impact of your activities within the aviation and maritime sectors.

“The Committee’s mandate is clear: to assess performance, determine value for money, identify gaps, and ensure that the intended objectives of these concessions have been met in a transparent and accountable manner.

“We are particularly interested in understanding the extent to which these arrangements have contributed to revenue generation, infrastructure development, operational efficiency, and adherence to regulatory frameworks.

“We expect full cooperation, candor, and professionalism from all parties. The integrity of the information presented here will guide our conclusions and recommendations, which are ultimately aimed at strengthening governance, improving sector performance, and safeguarding national interest”.

Executive Director, Ports and Cargo Terminal at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Olayiwola Olaruwanju said terminal operators have made significant investments in equipment and infrastructure.

Olaruwanji also said that operators have exceeded some of their initial equipment obligations, adding that while only 20 trucks were originally required, operators currently deploy about 125 trucks for operations, alongside increased capacity in other cargo handling equipment.

He said further that there has been investments in equipment such as reach stackers, forklifts, terminal tractors, and empty container handlers, with combined monetary values running into tens of millions of dollars, as well as infrastructure upgrades including quay reinforcement and maintenance facility renovations.

He said improvements in operational efficiency, deployment of information technology systems, cybersecurity upgrades, and human capital development.
