The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has ordered its Benue State Command to investigate a viral video showing female secondary school students stripping a fellow student naked and sexually harassing her at Seat of Wisdom Secondary School in Aliade, Benue State.

The disturbing 48-second footage, posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday by the account @mobilisingniger, has triggered widespread condemnation across Nigeria and reignited conversations about bullying, peer violence, and the safety of students in Nigerian schools.

The video depicts at least five girls in school uniforms — bright pink tops paired with dark pink skirts — ganging up on the victim, tearing at her clothes while she struggles to cover herself and appears visibly distressed.

The attackers are seen laughing and pulling her around as the assault continues.

According to reports, the students, who were about 10 in number, rushed to strip the victim of her clothing. The video showed them tearing off her skirt and stripping her to only her pants, while she cried nonstop.

After stripping her, the students, who reportedly had a male student in their midst, then proceeded to make the victim lie down in the bush.

The girls reportedly recorded videos and took photos of themselves during the act. The motive behind the assault remains unclear, with no confirmed details on what provoked the group action.

The post accompanying the video read: “Female students from a secondary school called Seat of Wisdom Aliade, in Benue State, strip their fellow female student naked and sexually harass her. The girls snapped videos and pictures of themselves committing this act, authorities are implored to investigate and address this matter; the girl is also another person’s daughter.”

In a statement on Monday via its official X account, NAPTIP described the incident as “a sad development” and confirmed that the case had been forwarded to the Benue State Command for immediate action.

The agency said the command had been instructed to work closely with relevant state authorities to ensure swift and appropriate action.

Nigerians have expressed shock and anger online, with many describing the behaviour as inhumane and calling for accountability.

Public reactions have tagged the Benue State Government, the Benue State Police Command, and NAPTIP, demanding swift investigation and intervention to protect the victim and punish those responsible.

Many have stressed that the incident should be treated as a criminal matter involving potential sexual violence rather than mere school bullying.

According to Myspotfinder, Seat of Wisdom is a government-owned secondary school located in Mbalav Ward, Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State.

The Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) found a public Facebook group bearing the school’s name and featuring pictures of students in the same uniform seen in the circulating video, although the group does not appear to be an official platform of the school.

FIJ reported that it called the phone number found on Benue State Ministry of Education and Knowledge Management’s website on Monday afternoon to inquire whether the ministry had seen the video, but the number was said to be invalid.

A phone number found on the Seat of Wisdom Old Students Association, Aliade, National Congress Facebook Page was also called but was switched off.

However, when FIJ contacted the Benue State Ministry of Women Affairs, an official who answered the call asked that the reporter share the video with them, as they are committed to investigating it.

As of Monday, authorities have not released official statements confirming arrests or expulsions, though some social media users claim those involved may have faced school-level consequences.

The Benue State Police Command and state government are yet to issue detailed updates publicly.

Updates from relevant authorities are expected in the coming days.

The Seat of Wisdom Secondary School incident has exposed the alarming reality of peer violence and sexual harassment in Nigerian schools.

The fact that the perpetrators recorded themselves committing the act and apparently circulated the footage suggests a troubling lack of awareness about the gravity of their actions — and potentially a belief that they would face no consequences.

The involvement of NAPTIP, an agency primarily tasked with combating human trafficking but which also handles cases of sexual exploitation and abuse, signals that authorities are treating the matter seriously.

However, the reported difficulty in reaching the Benue State Ministry of Education and the school’s old students association raises questions about communication channels and responsiveness in addressing such emergencies.

For the victim, the trauma extends beyond the physical assault — the circulation of the video online means her humiliation has been witnessed by thousands, adding a layer of psychological harm that will require careful attention.

The incident serves as a stark reminder that schools must be safe spaces for all students, and that peer violence — regardless of the gender of perpetrators — must be treated with the same seriousness as any other form of assault.

Calls for the matter to be treated as a criminal case rather than a disciplinary issue reflect growing awareness that such acts have consequences that extend far beyond school walls.
