The Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, has presented brand-new Honda Accord vehicles to the 17 Local Government chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state. The handover took place on Monday at the party’s state secretariat in Damaturu.

The presentation, carried out on behalf of the governor by Deputy Governor Idi Barde Gubana, is part of an initiative aimed at supporting party operations and strengthening grassroots mobilisation across the state’s local government areas.

Gubana urged the beneficiaries to make effective use of the vehicles and remain committed to unity within the party. “The vehicles are meant to support your activities and help you mobilise support for the party’s policies and programmes in your respective local governments,” he said. He also advised the chairmen to avoid actions that could create division and emphasised adherence to party principles and collaboration with key state stakeholders.

The state APC chairman, Muhammad Gadaka, expressed gratitude to the governor for the gesture, urging the chairmen to reciprocate through dedication and hard work. In addition to the vehicles, Buni donated Sallah clothes and wrappers to 37 members of the state party executive. The Secretary to the Yobe State Government, Baba Malam Wali, also contributed N2 million to enable the chairmen to purchase fuel for the vehicles.

However, the gesture has sparked debate, with a lawyer in the state noting that many magistrates, and even some judges, do not have official vehicles, yet the newly elected APC chairmen were given brand-new cars. The lawyer added that the move highlights how politics appears to be more financially rewarding than other institutions in Nigeria.
