The Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), has rejected the Labour Party’s request for the commission to dissolve all states, local government and ward executives of the party and constitute a working committee.

The party, led by Nenadi Usman, had written to the commission seeking the dissolution of party executives at all levels and the constitution of an interim working committee.

But INEC said it cannot accept the dissolution request by the party.

In a reply to the party, signed by its secretary, Bose Oriaran-Anthony, INEC said the party did not give the required statutory notice for the meeting where its National Executive Council (NEC) met to decide the dissolution.

The letter added that the party’s NEC also doesn’t have such powers.

“The commission regrets to inform you that the dissolution of State, Local Government and Ward Executives of your Party in all the 36 States and FCT by the National Executive Council (NEC) without giving the Statutory Notice of the meeting to the Commission and without the authority to act in your Party Constitution cannot be acceded to,” the letters reads in part.

Mrs Usman-led executive assumed the party’s helm of affairs in January, following a court judgment that affirmed her executive as the rightful leadership of the party.

The Federal High Court in Abuja had ordered the electoral commission to recognise Mrs Usman as the acting chairperson of the party, noting the former chairperson, Julius Abure’s tenure had expired.

However, the new executive is seeking to dissolve the election of state, local government and ward executives during the party’s congress in December.
