A loud explosion was reported in eastern Tehran on Wednesday, according to multiple news agencies, intensifying tensions in an already volatile Middle East conflict. Authorities have yet to provide full details on the cause or impact of the blast.

In a separate development, Sri Lankan authorities confirmed the rescue of at least 30 sailors from a sinking Iranian naval vessel near its waters. The Sri Lankan Navy launched a rescue mission after a distress call from the frigate, identified in local reports as the Iris Dena, off the coast of Galle.

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister said injured crew members from the 180-person vessel were taken to hospital, though the cause of the incident remains unclear.

Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, warned that any Iranian leader chosen to succeed slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei would be targeted if they continued policies hostile to Israel and its allies.

Khamenei was reportedly killed in joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Tehran, marking a dramatic escalation in hostilities.

In Washington, the United States Senate is preparing to vote on a war powers resolution aimed at limiting President Donald Trump’s authority to expand military operations against Iran without congressional approval.

The resolution faces significant hurdles in the Republican-controlled Congress and would likely face a presidential veto if passed.

Top administration officials have warned lawmakers to expect a broader and more intense wave of strikes in the coming days. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the “hardest hits are yet to come,” describing the campaign as potentially prolonged.

The U.S. government confirmed that six American service members have been killed since operations began. Four Army reservists died in Kuwait after a drone strike hit Port Shuabia. Eighteen others have reportedly sustained serious injuries.

Iran has retaliated with missile and drone strikes targeting U.S. bases and allied nations across the region, including Iraq, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. Iranian authorities claim nearly 800 people have been killed in U.S. and Israeli strikes, while Israel and Gulf states have also reported casualties.

Meanwhile, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz — a vital global oil transit route — has raised alarm over energy security, particularly for countries like India that rely heavily on Middle Eastern crude.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claims control of the shipping corridor and has warned vessels attempting passage could face attack. Oil flows have reportedly halted since the strikes began, pushing up crude prices and triggering fears of prolonged global supply disruptions.

Iran’s use of low-cost Shahed drones has emerged as a key feature of the conflict. Though many have been intercepted by U.S. and allied air defence systems, experts warn that the cost imbalance — inexpensive drones versus costly interceptors — could strain Western military stockpiles if the conflict drags on.

Analysts say the evolving drone warfare strategy mirrors tactics used by Russia in Ukraine and could reshape future global conflicts.

President Trump has indicated that the military campaign could last four to five weeks, though he has not ruled out a longer engagement. Congressional debate continues over the scope and legality of the operation as the crisis shows no sign of immediate de-escalation.
