Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has commissioned a new radio station, Majority FM 89.5, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The radio station is located within the office of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, amid growing political mobilisation ahead of Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, particularly in the South-South region.

A video shared on Saturday by Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, via his X handle, showed the minister inspecting the newly launched facility. In the footage, Wike is seen moving through the studio and interacting with staff.

Sharing the video, Olayinka wrote, “Rivers State Renewed Hope Ambassadors don get Radio Station on top Tinubu’s matter.

“It is Majority FM 89.5 located right inside the Renewed Hope Ambassadors’ office in Port Harcourt that the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike just commissioned.”

During the commissioning, Wike said the station would serve as a platform to disseminate political messages across the state.

“This will take messages from all over the 6,866 units of Rivers State. We are ready for this job. We are ready for 2027,” he said.

Reacting to the development, Arise News anchor Rufai Oseni (@ruffydfire) said on X:

“Wike opens a new radio station in Portharcourt solely for 2027 elections campaign. Politicians aren’t joking. Nigerians are sleeping.”

Many Nigerians are asking how Wike got the licence and who approved it for a radio station dedicated to political campaigning.

The concerns center on whether due process was followed in obtaining broadcasting licences from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), and whether it is appropriate for a sitting minister to commission a radio station specifically for campaign purposes ahead of the 2027 elections.

The commissioning comes as part of intensified political mobilisation by the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, a group backing President Tinubu’s re-election bid.

Wike has been at the forefront of this mobilisation in Rivers State and the South-South region, despite ongoing political tensions with Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The fact that the radio station is located directly inside the Renewed Hope Ambassadors’ office in Port Harcourt raises questions about the separation between political campaigning and media operations.

Broadcasting regulations typically require editorial independence and balance from licensed stations.

Wike’s statement that “we are ready for 2027” and the specific mention of reaching “all over the 6,866 units of Rivers State” indicates that the station is being positioned as a tool for grassroots political mobilisation ahead of the next general elections.
