Alimi & Co, legal representatives of Mr Abubakar Suleiman Mayaki, CEO of MYK Land and Properties Ltd, have issued a formal demand letter to Naij.com Media Limited, accusing the outlet of publishing false, misleading and defamatory content that allegedly harms their client’s reputation.

The letter, dated January 27, 2026, targets a Naij.com publication titled “Lagos Magistrate Court Indicts Abubakar Suleiman Mayaki on Two-Count Charge of Murder.” According to the solicitors, the report is “false, misleading, reckless and defamatory,” as it frames an incident allegedly dating back to 2004 in a manner that suggests an ongoing judicial process against Mayaki. They argue that this creates a “false impression” of current criminal proceedings, exposing Mayaki to “public odium, ridicule and contempt.”

The letter states that the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) issued legal advice fully exonerating Mayaki, with no subsisting or continuing criminal case related to the matter. It further emphasises that a publicly available court ruling contradicts the publication’s claims.

The allegations stem from the death of Kazeem Idowu, also referred to in some reports as Idowu Keshinro, described as a hunter and staff member of the Ikosi-Ejirin Local Government Area. Earlier police investigations led to the arraignment of four suspects on charges of conspiracy to commit robbery and unlawful killing under Lagos State criminal laws. Mayaki and another individual, Akande Ahmed Omogbemi, were initially declared at large.

On September 26, 2024, Mayaki was remanded in custody by the Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Ikeja in Charge Nos. MIK/E/92/24 and CR/MISC/E/31/24, pending DPP review. However, following DPP advice dated November 12, 2024, with reference number LJP/HOM/2024/119, which concluded that there was “nothing to link him with the alleged offences,” the court acted accordingly.

On November 25, 2024, Magistrate Lateef Owolabi ruled: “Based on the above and on the advice of the DPP, there is no reason to continue to detain the defendant in the custody of the correctional services. Accordingly, the defendant, Mr Mayaki, be and is hereby released from the custody of the correctional services forthwith.” The release was effected immediately in the presence of both prosecution and defence counsel.

The ruling effectively cleared Mayaki of involvement in the alleged murder, underscoring the DPP’s constitutional role in reviewing evidence and determining prosecutorial viability under Nigerian law. The decision has been widely reported as exonerating Mayaki, correcting earlier narratives of indictment or ongoing remand.

In the demand letter, Alimi & Co demanded:

  1. Immediate retraction of the publication across all Naij.com platforms.
  2. A public apology accorded the same prominence as the original article.
  3. A written undertaking to refrain from future defamatory publications concerning Mayaki.
Abubakar Suleiman Mayaki

The firm warned that failure to comply within 48 hours of receipt would result in legal action seeking damages, injunctive relief and costs, without further notice. The letter was signed by M. D. Idris Esq. and issued without prejudice to Mayaki’s rights..
