Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi is in mourning following the death of his father, Sunday Ndidi, a retired military officer, who died on Tuesday in a road accident in Umunede, Delta State. He was rushed to a hospital in Agbor, where he was later confirmed dead.

Reacting to the loss, Ndidi shared his grief in an emotional Instagram story, writing:
“Eeraq, you call me this morning with excitement in your voice but deep down na goodbye you dey tell me … What about things we talked about, so we no go talk again Na only memories?…”

Ndidi also recalled dedicating his first-ever goal for Nigeria to his father, noting that the celebration was inspired by Sunday Ndidi’s admiration for former Super Eagles captain Kanu Nwankwo. “Even when I score my first national team goal I do that Papilo dance for you, but you just go like that EERAQ,” he lamented.

Turkish club Besiktas, where Ndidi plays, confirmed the tragedy in a statement on their official X account, expressing condolences to the midfielder and his family.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our footballer Wilfred Ndidi’s esteemed father, Sunday Ndidi, in a fatal traffic accident. May Allah grant mercy to the deceased; we extend our condolences to our footballer Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and loved ones,” the club said.

The loss comes just weeks after Ndidi helped Nigeria secure a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, where he was one of the team’s key players. During the tournament, Ndidi scored his first international goal in the group-stage win over Tunisia, celebrating with a special tribute to Kanu Nwankwo, honoring his father’s admiration for the football legend.

Born and raised in Lagos, Ndidi often credits his father for instilling discipline and a love for football, recalling his upbringing in the barracks under Sunday Ndidi’s guidance.

The news has resonated deeply with Nigerians, especially following other recent tragedies involving sports figures. In December 2025, former world boxing champion Anthony Joshua was involved in a road accident that claimed the lives of two close associates, while Joshua himself suffered only minor injuries.

January has thus emerged as a particularly difficult month for the Super Eagles family, evoking memories of goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who lost both parents within months in 2025.

Tributes have continued to pour in for Ndidi from teammates, fans, and well-wishers, praising his dedication to the Super Eagles and the pride he brings to Nigeria. The football community is expected to stand by him and his family during this difficult period.
