President Bola Tinubu has withdrawn the appointment of former Kebbi State Governor, Usman Dakingari, as ambassador-designate to Turkey, less than 24 hours after the announcement was made.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga cited a “naming mix-up” as the reason for the reversal, stating that the Turkey posting is now undergoing review. The presidency issued the clarification on Friday, shortly after announcing the diplomatic postings on Thursday night.

Despite the reversal, the President confirmed the posting of three other ambassador-designates from the 68 nominees confirmed by the Senate in December. Ambassador Ayodele Oke, former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), has been posted to France. Colonel Kayode Are (rtd), former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), will serve as ambassador to the United States of America. Ambassador Amin Dalhatu, previously Nigeria’s ambassador to South Korea, has been appointed High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

The presidency has directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to formally notify the governments of France, the United States, and the United Kingdom of the approved postings in accordance with established diplomatic procedures.

The development comes ahead of President Tinubu’s scheduled state visit to Turkey next week. No further details have been provided regarding the nature of the naming mix-up or when a new ambassador-designate to Turkey will be announced.
