A 300-level student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBB), Lapai, in Niger State, Kelvin Danlami, has committed suicide.

Kelvin, a Computer Science student at the institution, reportedly took his life on Monday after losing the house rent money kept in his custody due to gambling.

A university student, Musa Abdullahi, expressed his sympathy in a condolence message, warning young people to beware of the dangers of chasing quick money.

He said, “Yesterday, we lost a student from my alma mater who committed suicide after mismanaging money entrusted to him for house rent due to gambling.

“This is how gambling cut short the life of a promising 300-level Computer Science student.

“Dear young people, please stay away from anything that promises quick money through the wrong means.

“May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may Allah grant his family the strength to bear this painful loss.”

The General Secretary of the school’s Students’ Union Government (SUG), Aliyu Abubakar, also shared a condolence message with newsmen.

The message read, “The Students’ Union Government of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, received with deep sorrow the sad news of the passing of Kelvin Danlami, a 300-level student of the Department of Computer Science, who has answered the call of his Creator.

“On behalf of the entire student community of IBB University, Lapai, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, relatives, friends, the Department of Computer Science, and all students of the University over this great and painful loss.

“Kelvin’s demise is indeed a tragic and irreplaceable loss, not only to his immediate family but also to his department and the entire University community. We pray that Almighty God grants his family the strength, comfort, and fortitude to bear this moment of grief, and that He consoles his colleagues and loved ones.”

The SUG message concluded, “Please accept our deepest sympathies. Yours in solidarity, Aliyu Abubakar, General Secretary, SUG Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai.”

The spokesman of the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, also reacted to the incident, stating that investigations were ongoing.

He said, “On 19/1/26, at about 10:30 a.m., information was received that, in the early hours of the day, one Kelvin Danlami, a student of IBBL, was found to have hanged himself in his room with a cloth tied to the ceiling fan.

“One of the student neighbors discovered the situation, raised an alarm, and the victim was rushed to General Hospital Lapai, where he was confirmed dead. Police operatives attached to Lapai Division visited the scene, conducted a preliminary investigation, and contacted the family of the deceased. Further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the reason for this tragic action,” he said.
