Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua on Friday night knocked out YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in a controversial, Netflix-backed bout held in Miami, United States.

The fight, staged at the Kaseya Center, ended in the sixth round of the scheduled eight-round contest after Joshua landed a decisive right hand that sent Paul crashing to the canvas for the fourth time.

Despite widespread criticism before the bout over the mismatch in size, experience and pedigree between the two fighters, Paul survived longer than many observers had predicted. However, Joshua’s superior power and ring control ultimately proved decisive.

The contest was scrappy and uneven, with Paul frequently dropping to the canvas and resorting to clinching and grappling to blunt Joshua’s advances. At one point, referee Christopher Young publicly expressed frustration with the lack of sustained action during the fourth round.

Joshua, 36, gradually asserted dominance as the fight wore on. After flooring the 28-year-old American twice in the fifth round, the British boxer closed the show in the sixth, backing Paul into a corner before unleashing a left-right combination, capped by a crushing right to the chin.

“It wasn’t the best performance,” Joshua admitted after the fight. “The goal was to pin Jake down and hurt him. It took longer than expected, but the right hand finally landed.”

Joshua also praised Paul’s resilience, acknowledging his opponent’s ability to repeatedly beat the count. “He got up time and time again. It was difficult in there for him, but he kept trying. That takes heart,” he said.

Paul, whose mouth was bloodied during the closing stages, said he believed his jaw had been broken but insisted he was satisfied with his showing. “That was fun. I gave it my all,” he said. “Anthony is one of the best to ever do it. I just got tired trying to handle his weight. He hits really hard.”

The bout came more than a year after Paul’s widely criticised exhibition fight against a 58-year-old Mike Tyson, and had drawn heavy backlash from boxing purists who warned of potential safety risks.

Statistics from the fight underlined Joshua’s control, with the former Olympic champion landing 48 of 146 punches, compared to Paul’s 16 successful strikes.

The victory marked Joshua’s return to the ring after a 15-month absence and improved his career knockout tally to 26. He now appears set to pursue a high-profile showdown with fellow British former world champion Tyson Fury.

“We’ve shaken off the cobwebs,” Joshua said. “If Tyson Fury is as serious as he says he is, let’s put on the gloves and fight.”
