The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has directed domestic airlines to submit their fare filings to the Directorate of Air Transport Regulation, warning that any inconsistencies could attract sanctions.

The directive follows growing complaints from passengers over flight cancellations, delays, and alleged resale of tickets at inflated prices.

Speaking during a meeting with airline operators in Abuja, the NCAA’s Director of Consumer Protection and Public Relations, Mr. Michael Achimugu, disclosed that reports indicated some airfares had risen above ₦500,000 without any corresponding increase in statutory taxes or charges.

He stressed that airlines must ensure that fares submitted to the regulator accurately reflect the prices charged to passengers, warning that violations would be met with strict regulatory action.

“The level of disruption we have seen is unacceptable. Passengers have endured avoidable delays and cancellations, and in some cases, tickets have been resold at inflated rates. Airlines must be held accountable,” Achimugu said.

He revealed that the NCAA had conducted inspections and sting operations at several airports, uncovering irregular ticketing practices, poor passenger communication, and delays in refund processing.

Achimugu cautioned that airlines found to be persistent offenders could face penalties of up to ₦100 million.

In response, airline representatives acknowledged challenges with refund processing, attributing some of the issues to third-party ticketing agents and payment platforms. They, however, pledged to improve communication, ensure timely refunds, and keep passengers adequately informed during flight disruptions.
