Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC, announcing the move at a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt on Tuesday evening.

The announcement followed a closed-door meeting Fubara held on Monday with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

Addressing PDP and APC stakeholders at the Government House, Port Harcourt, the governor said his decision was driven by the need for protection and political stability, which he claimed the PDP failed to provide during the recent political turmoil in Rivers State.

“I went to see Mr. President not just for a personal visit, but for a consultation on state matters,” Fubara said. “The most important outcome of that meeting is that we now have full support to leave where we were because we didn’t get the protection we needed. The struggles we faced were due to the crisis in the state.”

He added, “If President Tinubu had not intervened, there wouldn’t be a Siminalayi Fubara today. We have the people and supporters with us. Our decision is to move to the APC and fully support the President’s second-term bid. This aligns with stable governance for Rivers.”

Fubara’s defection marks a major political shift in Rivers State, coming just weeks after 16 pro-Wike lawmakers defected to the APC on December 5, deepening the rift between Fubara and former governor Nyesom Wike. Sources say recent discussions with President Tinubu played a decisive role in the governor’s move.

Reactions have been swift. PDP leaders have described Fubara’s defection as a “betrayal,” while the APC has hailed it as a “homecoming.” The move is expected to ease the passage of the 2026 budget and strengthen Fubara’s prospects should he seek re-election in 2027 under the APC.

Developing story.
