Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama, OFR, Life Bencher, delivered a landmark paper on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the African Bar Association (AFBA) Conference held at Labadi Beach Hotel, Accra, Ghana.

The paper, titled “Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) in Mining Deals in Africa: A Myth or Achievable Standard for Indigenous Communities?”, addressed critical issues surrounding indigenous communities’ rights in mining operations across the continent.
Chief Gadzama, a Life Member of the AFBA Governing Council, was represented by Ms. Onyekachi Eluwa, Esq., who presented the paper on his behalf. During the presentation, Eluwa emphasized that “human beings, individually and as groups, have an equal entitlement to be in control of their own destinies or to shape their own futures, and to live within governing institutional systems that are accordingly designed to reflect this entitlement.”
The session, described as intellectually stimulating, featured other prominent speakers including Peter Akper, SAN, Kofi Annan, Eniola Asonuga, and Prince Osisiadan. Participants engaged actively through commentaries and questions, leaving the audience greatly enlightened on the practical and legal implications of FPIC in mining projects.
