Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has described Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as the only opposition figure in Nigeria with significant traction, while maintaining that no candidate is likely to defeat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election.

Fayose made the remarks on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, asserting that other opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, are largely “filling the gap” and no longer resonate with the electorate.

“Tell me, who will defeat the APC? The only opposition that I know in Nigeria—the only one that still has traction—is Obi. No other one. The only voice that is still talking, that is everywhere despite not being in government, is Obi. I give it to him. All others are just filling the gap,” Fayose said.

On the coalition formed by opposition leaders, including Obi, Atiku, former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, to adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 elections, Fayose dismissed the ADC as a credible threat, saying, “ADC is going nowhere.”

Despite his commentary on opposition politics, Fayose reiterated his respect for President Tinubu, clarifying that his support for the President is not for personal gain. He disclosed that he had rejected an appointment from Tinubu.

“Have you seen me taking an appointment from the APC? Asiwaju asked me, ‘What would we give you?’ I said, ‘Nothing, sir.’ At 65, I would rather be at home, being more responsible and doing other things I need to do. I am not hobnobbing with the APC, but I have been Asiwaju’s friend and brother for a long time,” Fayose said.

On the crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the former governor described the main opposition party as “dead” and predicted that three more PDP governors would soon defect to the APC, leaving only five remaining in the party. He accused some PDP governors of undermining the party for personal control, adding that President Tinubu should not be blamed for the defections.

“President Tinubu should not be blamed for PDP’s problems. The PDP is sick and remains perpetually sick without a cure in view. Those who killed the party know themselves,” Fayose said.

Although still a member of the PDP, Fayose said he bears no responsibility for resolving its internal crises, insisting that the current leadership must address the party’s challenges.
