May Agbamuche-Mbu’s appointment as Acting INEC Chairman on Tuesday, 7 October 2025, marks a milestone in Nigeria’s electoral history. Beyond her decades-long legal career, she brings a rare combination of public sector insight and private sector excellence to the country’s top election body.

Hailed from Delta State but born in Kano, Agbamuche-Mbu’s journey to the top began at St. Louis Secondary School. She earned her Law degree from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1984 and was called to the Nigerian Bar a year later, setting the stage for a distinguished legal career.

Her ambitions extended beyond Nigeria. She furthered her legal education at the College of Law, London, qualifying as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales. She also earned an LLM in Commercial and Corporate Law from Queen Mary and Westfield College, followed by postgraduate programs in International Dispute Resolution and International Business Law, establishing her as a globally minded legal professional.

Agbamuche-Mbu’s expertise includes Alternative Dispute Resolution, where she has distinguished herself as a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK), Nigeria branch, serving previously as its Secretary. Her multifaceted skill set positioned her as a problem-solver capable of navigating the intersections of law, commerce, and governance.

Her public service record is equally impressive. Between 2010 and 2011, she served as the sole solicitor on the Presidential Projects Assessment Committee (PPAC), reviewing unfinished public projects across Nigeria. In 2016, she joined a Ministerial Committee tasked with charting a new roadmap for the solid minerals sector, reinforcing her reputation as a trusted technocrat.

In the private sector, Agbamuche-Mbu built a strong legal and media presence. She served as Managing Partner of Norfolk Partners, a Lagos-based law firm, and edited THISDAY Lawyer, a weekly legal pullout. Between 2014 and 2016, her “Legal Eagle” column produced 120 incisive editorials, offering legal analysis and advocacy on both national and international issues, cementing her voice as an authority in law, justice, and governance.

This blend of legal acumen, media influence, and public service experience made her a natural choice when she was appointed a National Commissioner of INEC in 2016.
