The Nigerian Law Society (NLS) has unveiled the inaugural edition of its Monthly Insights newsletter, marking a new chapter for the nation’s premier professional association of lawyers and solicitors. Released on Friday, the debut edition, titled “The Trends Shaping the Future of Law in Nigeria,” highlights transformative shifts in the legal landscape, including the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), evolving client demands, stricter regulations, and the growing prominence of alternative dispute resolution (ADR).

Dr. Lilian Uche, National Publicity Secretary of the NLS and Editor-in-Chief of the newsletter, described the publication as a “beacon for insights, a forum for connection, and an empowered legal community we are building together.” She emphasized the society’s commitment to equipping lawyers to navigate rapid technological, regulatory, and client-driven changes, positioning them as architects of the future.
The newsletter identifies four major trends set to influence the profession through 2025 and beyond:
- AI and Technology Revolution: AI is increasingly used for contract review, document drafting, and efficiency enhancement. Leading firms, such as ALN Nigeria, are integrating these tools, allowing lawyers to focus on strategic advisory roles. The Legal 500 rankings highlight top performers leveraging AI to remain competitive.
- Client-Centric Shifts: Modern clients demand transparency, cost predictability, and digital engagement. Over half of law firms now plan to adopt activity-based billing and fixed-fee arrangements to meet these expectations.
- Regulatory Pressures: The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, Cybercrimes (Prohibition) Act 2024, and Nigeria Tax Act 2025 have heightened compliance obligations. Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors are also increasingly integral, positioning risk management as a premium service.
- ADR’s Ascendancy: Arbitration and mediation are gaining traction to mitigate litigation delays, supported by the Arbitration and Mediation Act 2023 and the National Policy on Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution 2024–2028. Legal practitioners are urged to develop ADR expertise to efficiently serve clients.
The newsletter also recaps the NLS’s 3rd Annual General Assembly and Conference (July 23–25, 2025), themed “The Journey So Far.” Keynote addresses were delivered by Prof. Usufon Effiong Maxell J. Yaguda SAN, with sessions chaired by former Attorney General Mohammed Bello Adoke CFR SAN and Mahmoud Bello SAN. Goodwill messages were received from sister organizations including the NBA, African Bar Association (AFBA), Pan-African Lawyers Union (PALU), and Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA).
Highlights included:
- Inauguration of new executive members at the AGM.
- Awards night honoring luminaries such as Chief Aisha Wali SAN, Dr. Kulu Ogumba SAN, Chief T. Turaki SAN, Chief Bola Iyoriye SAN, and Chief J. Kyari Gazama SAN.
- A gallery of panels, networking sessions, and presentations from speakers including Amanda L. Freeze and Dr. Kulu Ogumba SAN.
- The 1st Annual NLS Golf Kitty at Zuma Rock Golf Course in Abuja, won by Mr. Ubong Eyo Akpan, with the trophy presented by Chief Joe Kyari Gazama SAN.
The newsletter introduces the 2025–2028 National Officers:
- 1st Vice President: Chief Mela SAN
- General Secretary: Mrs. Olusola Ojo Awonuga
- Treasurer: Mrs. Chinyere Onyinyechi Lilian Uche
- Publicity Secretary: Hassan Olanrewaju
Tributes were paid to outgoing executives (2022–2024) led by Chief Mela Adua Nwoke SAN and former President Kunle Ogunsa SAN for their foundational contributions.
The NLS reaffirmed its collaborations with AFBA, PALU, NBA, FIDA, and other international bodies, reinforcing its commitment to judicial independence and justice reform.
