Former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Lagos Branch, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, has decried the abduction of a newly called female lawyer, Onyesom Peace Udoka, and her sister along the Okene axis in Kogi State, describing it as “another painful scar on our nation’s conscience.”

In a statement issued on Sunday, Akangbe lamented that what should have been a season of celebration following the recent Call to Bar ceremony had been turned into “tears and uncertainty” due to insecurity on the nation’s highways.

“When our highways become hunting grounds for kidnappers, we must ask ourselves: what kind of society are we building? The measure of any nation is not in the splendour of its ceremonies, but in the safety and dignity it guarantees to its citizens,” Akangbe said.

He urged security agencies to act with “urgency and compassion” to ensure the release of the victims and restore public confidence in the safety of Nigeria’s roads. According to him, leadership is a “sacred trust” which is betrayed when citizens can no longer move freely within their own country.

While praying for the safe return of the abducted victims, Akangbe called on those in authority to rise above rhetoric and take decisive action to restore faith in the Nigerian project.
