In a heartfelt tribute, Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama, OFR, SAN, Life Bencher, C.Arb., has celebrated his elder brother, mentor, and friend, Asiwaju Adegboyega Solomon Awomolo, SAN, on his 78th birthday, highlighting his remarkable contributions to the legal profession and his personal impact on colleagues and friends.

In the tribute, Gadzama recalled his first encounter with Awomolo in 1997, when Awomolo led him through pre-election matters before the Federal High Court, Maiduguri. He described the relationship that blossomed from that point as “like a tube and tyre, firmly bound both professionally and personally,” noting Awomolo’s role as a father figure, confidant, and steadfast friend throughout life’s milestones.

Gadzama recounted Awomolo’s presence at key personal events, including family weddings and moments of tragedy, such as the loss of Gadzama’s wife during the Boko Haram attacks on Chibok, emphasizing the comfort and support Awomolo provided during difficult times.

Professionally, Awomolo’s mentorship and guidance have been transformative. Gadzama recalled how Awomolo witnessed and counselled him when he became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 1998. Despite sometimes opposing each other in court, Awomolo’s conduct embodied grace, collegiality, and respect, reinforcing the principle that friendship and professional rivalry can coexist in the noble practice of law.

Beyond personal connections, Awomolo has left an enduring legacy in the Nigerian legal profession. A fearless advocate, he has significantly shaped constitutional and electoral jurisprudence in Nigeria, championed justice, and strengthened the independence of the Bar. As a mentor, he has guided generations of younger lawyers with wisdom, patience, and integrity.

Gadzama highlighted Awomolo’s pivotal role in resolving the NBA leadership crisis of the 1990s, likening him to “the Chief Ernest Shonekan of the Legal Profession” for his bridge-building leadership that restored stability and unity. He also praised Awomolo’s tenure as immediate past Chairman of the Body of Benchers, noting his innovation, diligence, and lasting contributions to the Bar’s highest regulatory body.

Awomolo’s legacy extends to public service as the first Attorney General of Osun State, where his influence continues to be felt. Gadzama also paid tribute to the enduring partnership between Awomolo and his wife, Chief Victoria Awomolo, SAN, describing them as “two of a kind” whose combined eminence inspires admiration within and outside the legal profession.

Reflecting on visits to Awomolo’s hometown of Igbajo, Osun State, Gadzama praised his humility, cultural pride, and commitment to community. He shared a personal anecdote of a hand bell gifted by Awomolo, which Gadzama continues to use in his office, symbolizing thoughtfulness, heritage, and enduring friendship.

Concluding the tribute, Gadzama celebrated Awomolo’s 78 years as a life of resilience, faith, and dedication to the Bar, family, justice, and community. He wished him continued strength, health, and fulfillment in the years ahead, declaring: “Happy birthday, Leader of leaders, my dear elder brother and friend. Igba Odun, Odun Kan.”
