Senator Ned Nwoko called on the people of Anioma in Delta State to fully embrace their Igbo identity and align with their eastern counterparts in the struggle for unity, justice, and political relevance.

Speaking at a high-powered conference in Asaba, organised by the Igbo Unification Movement and Ndi na Asu Bia, the Delta North lawmaker declared: “There is no argument about our Igbo-ness… The time has come to reverse the old narratives that separated us from our brothers across the Niger.”
The event themed “Igbo Bu Ofu” (Igbos Are One) brought together activists and traditional leaders from across Delta, Edo, and the South-East, reinforcing growing support for Igbo-speaking border communities to reclaim their place in the wider Igbo narrative.
Nwoko, who recently sponsored a bill for the creation of Anioma State, said the demand is not about partisan politics but about historical correction and identity restoration.
“This is not about APC, PDP, or Labour Party. I have no interest in being governor. I want Anioma to stand tall with its own state, with Asaba as its capital,” he said, adding that this aligns with Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s vision of recognising Anioma as an Igbo state.
Recalling the trauma of the Nigerian civil war, Nwoko lamented how Anioma communities were forced to deny their Igbo roots to escape persecution.
“We faced ethnic cleansing. Our people had to pretend they were not Igbo to survive. That identity crisis must end,” he said.
He commended researchers like Prof. Abigail Ogwezzy of the University of Lagos for their scholarly work on Anioma’s linguistic and cultural heritage, which he said reinforces the group’s undeniable Igbo lineage.
The Igbo Unification Movement and Ndi na Asu Bia, now vocal platforms for cultural revival, argue that a united Igbo identity is key to political strength and reversing decades of marginalisation.
Ending his address with a rallying call, Nwoko said: “Just like a Chinese man is Chinese anywhere in the world, the Igbo man is Igbo, whether from Delta, Imo, or Abia. Anioma must rise to embrace its identity.”
He urged continued advocacy, education, and mobilisation, saying only through unity can Anioma achieve statehood and the Igbo nation regain its full voice in Nigeria’s political landscape.
